Community Based Mental Health Care in the coastal areas of Alappuzha

THE CHALLENGE
Mehac’s focus in this project was on the overall rehabilitation of psychiatric patients through strengthening local public health initiatives including the establishment of a wide network of voluntary groups. The project aimed to provide care to people with acute mental illness, children with learning disabilities and people suffering from substance abuse.
OUR WORK

Free mental health care and treatment were provided to patients in the coastal regions of Punnapra, Chettikad, Mararikulam, Arthunkal, Azheekal and Mannancherry in Alappuzha

Regular follow-ups and home care visits for the patients were conducted by psychiatric professionals and psycho-social workers

A separate electronic case record was maintained for each patient

Beneficiaries from the project’s target groups were equipped with vocational skills that helped them to generate a source of income

Awareness was created among the general public about the need and importance of psychiatric care
